Books
Mosier, John. The Myth of the Great War, pg. 229. New York; Perennial, 2001. Print.
  • This was a book that was assigned to us to read over the summer before our trip to Europe in the fall. I really liked this book because it had a lot of useful information about the whole of WWI. What was particularily useful to me was the chapter 1916: The Massacre on the Somme. It was more specific to what I am working on with my project.

Liddle, H. Peter. The 1916 Battle of the Somme. Great Britain; LEO COOPER, 1993. Print.
  • This was a book I rented from the McIntyre Library. I really like this book because it takes the battle in chunks, which is what I was doing with my project. It talks about the events from July to September, September to November, and then the end of the battle. It focuses on key events from the war and this is something I will be able to benefit from.

McCarthy, Chris. The Somme: The day-by-day account. London; Sterling Publishing Co. Print.
  • This was another book I rented from the McIntyre Library. I was not particularily fond of this book, not because of a lack of information, but because the information wasn't relevant to my project. This book focused on the day-by-day movements of each regiment while I am looking at a more broad picture of the battle. I did like the maps in this book though.

Websites

  • This site has a lot of information about the Battle of the Somme, which I like. The main reason I utilized this site was for the map of the front lines from the Battle. I wanted to get numerous different maps to compare.

  • This was another site that I used for its map of the front lines from the Battle of the Somme. I wasn't as fond of this map as I was with the map from the site before, but it was good to be able to compare.

  • This site was unique compared to the other map sites I used. This site had an animated map of the front lines and how they changed from month to month. I really liked this because that is the same concept that I am try to do with my interactive map of the Battle of the Somme.

  • While this site also has a map of the front lines fromt he Battle of the Somme I utilized this site more for its information than its images. It gives a great overview of the battle that I have used to write my descriptions for my interactive map.

  • This site was useful to me because it talks about the end of the war with the number of casualties for both sides and the total movement of the front lines during these five months. It put into perspective why some would believe this battle was unnecessary.

  • While working on my Battle of the Somme front lines map I used this website a lot. This site game me a breakdown of the important battles from the Somme, the objectives, and the outcomes from each battle. Along with the dates they occurred.

  • I used this site to locate the Casino Point crater near Carnoy. This crater was a little more difficult to locate because there are no maps to help locate it. I located it through utilizing the text's description of the location.
